Ājaññajātaka draft
Ājaññajātaka (Ja 24). Once, when Brahmadatta was ruling in Benares, seven kings laid siege to the city. A warrior sent by Brahmadatta harnessed two horses (brothers) and, sallying forth from the city, overcame six camps and captured six kings. Just then the elder horse (who was the Bodhisatta) was wounded. The charioteer unfastened the horse’s armour as he lay on his side, and started to arm another horse. The Bodhisatta addressed the charioteer and said that as an Ājañña horse he must fight on. The charioteer set him on his feet again and, with his help, captured the seventh camp and its king.
The Bodhisatta, having counselled the victorious king to show mercy to his captives, died, and his body was burnt with all honours.
The story was told to a monk who had given up striving. Ja.i.181-2.
Ājaññajātaka (Ja 24). Một lần, khi Brahmadatta đang trị vì ở Benares, bảy vị vua bao vây thành. Một chiến sĩ được Brahmadatta sai đi đã thắng hai con ngựa (anh em) vào xe, rồi xông ra khỏi thành, đánh bại sáu doanh trại và bắt sáu vị vua. Ngay lúc ấy, con ngựa anh (chính là Bodhisatta) bị thương. Người đánh xe tháo giáp của con ngựa khi nó nằm nghiêng, rồi bắt đầu trang bị cho một con ngựa khác. Bodhisatta nói với người đánh xe rằng, là một con ngựa Ājañña, ngài phải tiếp tục chiến đấu. Người đánh xe đỡ ngài đứng dậy, và với sự trợ giúp của ngài, chiếm được doanh trại thứ bảy cùng vị vua của doanh trại ấy.
Bodhisatta, sau khi khuyên vị vua chiến thắng hãy tỏ lòng khoan dung với các tù binh, đã chết; thân ngài được hỏa táng với đầy đủ nghi lễ tôn kính.
