Mahā Patāpa 01. Mahā Patāpana. King of Benares, father of the Bodhisatta in the Cūḷa Dhammapālajātaka (Ja 358, q.v.). He is identified with Devadatta. He was swallowed up by the earth. Ja.iii.182. Dhp­a.i.129.

Mahā Patāpa 02. A king of thirty-five kappas ago, a former birth of Vīra (or Nigguṇḍipupphiya) Thera. Thag­a.i.50; Ap.i.205.

Mahā Patāpa 03. A king of twenty-seven kappas ago; a former birth of Vataṁsakiya Thera. Ap.i.216.
