Bahuvedanīyasutta. Pañcakaṅga asks Udāyī (Paṇḍita Udāyī, says MNa.ii.629) how many kinds of feelings the Buddha mentions. Udāyī answers that there are three: pleasant, unpleasant and indifferent. Pañcakaṅga, however, insists that there are but two: pleasant and unpleasant. Ānanda, overhearing the conversation, reports it to the Buddha, who says that both Pañcakaṅga and Udāyī are correct because he himself classified feelings in various ways; sensual pleasures might be pleasant, but are not the highest pleasures; far better and more excellent are the pleasures enjoyed by a monk who develops the four jhānas, the plane of infinity of consciousness and the plane of nought. MN.i.396ff.; the Sutta is repeated at SN.iv.223ff., under the name of Pañcakaṅgasutta.

Ānanda, khi nghe lỏm được cuộc trò chuyện, đã báo cáo lại với Đức Phật, và Ngài nói rằng cả Pañcakaṅga và Udāyī đều đúng vì chính Ngài đã phân loại cảm thọ theo nhiều cách khác nhau; những thú vui nhục dục có thể mang lại sự dễ chịu, nhưng không phải là những niềm vui sướng cao tột nhất; tốt đẹp hơn và thù thắng hơn nhiều là những niềm hỷ lạc mà một vị tỳ-kheo thọ hưởng khi phát triển bốn jhāna, cõi Không vô biên xứ và cõi Vô sở hữu xứ.
